Termites or white ants are one of the most destructive insects in Australia causing millions of dollars worth of damage every year. The cost of cleaning up termite infestations annually in Australia is more expensive than the cost of clean up from natural disasters. Termites eat the cellulose that is found in the timber used in the construction of buildings. Most of the species of termites that are native to Australia are subterranean. This means that they live underground and will not be seen walking on the ground unless their nest has been disturbed. They do not like sunlight, so to keep from being exposed they build mud tunnels to and from the nest. Termites are more closely related to cockroaches in the insect world. The queen termite mates only once and produces offspring from that one mate for the rest of her life.
